Vietnam Seafood Exports in 7 Months of 2026 Reach USD 6.7 Billion

Vietnam seafood exports in the first seven months of 2026 maintained positive growth despite continued uncertainty in the global economy and international trade.

According to information released by VASEP at the end of July, seafood exports during the seven-month period were estimated at approximately USD 6.7 billion, up around 10.5% year on year. VASEP said the result reflected the industry's adaptability and provided a foundation for stronger full-year performance.

The more important issue, however, is what happens next.

Under favorable conditions, VASEP indicated that full-year seafood exports could approach USD 12.5 billion. Achieving that level will depend on whether the industry can resolve key constraints involving raw materials, markets, logistics, financing, and labor.

USD 6.7 Billion Is a Starting Point, Not the Finish Line

VASEP initially estimated seven-month exports at USD 6.7 billion and projected that, if major constraints were addressed, full-year export value could grow around 10–11% to approximately USD 12.5 billion.

Later data showed that actual seven-month exports reached nearly USD 6.86 billion, up 11.5%, although July growth slowed to about 4.8%.

This creates an important contrast:

Strong cumulative growth → slower recent momentum.

It means businesses should not assume that the pace recorded earlier in the year will automatically continue through the final months.

The USD 12.5 billion target represents an optimistic scenario

VASEP subsequently outlined three broad scenarios for 2026.

  • Base case: around USD 12.1–12.3 billion.
  • Positive case: around USD 12.5 billion.
  • Cautious case: approximately USD 11.8–12 billion.

The upper scenario depends on the removal of several market and policy barriers.

For seafood businesses, the key question for H2 is therefore not simply whether exports will continue growing, but which growth scenario the industry will ultimately follow.

Five Constraints Could Determine the Second Half

VASEP identifies raw materials, markets, logistics, financing, and labor among the main bottlenecks that need to be addressed if Vietnam's seafood industry is to maintain strong growth.

Raw-material competitiveness

Shrimp and pangasius remain major export categories, but aquaculture producers continue to face pressure from feed costs, seed quality, disease risks, and other production expenses.

Higher input costs can quickly reduce exporters' ability to compete on price.

Market demand

Export performance remains highly influenced by major destination markets.

VASEP's July figures showed strong growth in China and Hong Kong, while exports to the EU, South Korea, and the Middle East declined during the month.

This divergence reinforces the need for market diversification.

Logistics

Frozen seafood relies on cold storage, refrigerated transportation, and international shipping.

Higher logistics costs directly increase the landed cost of products and can weaken competitiveness in price-sensitive markets.

Access to capital

Seafood companies often need to finance raw materials, processing, cold storage, and logistics well before receiving payment for export shipments.

VASEP continues to call for improvements related to credit access and VAT refunds to support business cash flow.

Labor availability

Labor shortages are also among the pressures identified by VASEP.

For processing companies, workforce availability influences production capacity, delivery schedules, and the ability to expand higher-value processing.

H2 2026 Is About More Than Export Volume

Competition in seafood markets increasingly goes beyond production volume.

Companies must also compete on cost, specifications, processing depth, traceability, packaging, and supply consistency.

VASEP notes that shrimp remains Vietnam's largest seafood export category while pangasius continues to play a major role, but individual product groups face different competitive and market pressures.

This suggests a shift in strategy.

Instead of focusing solely on:

More volume

businesses increasingly need to focus on:

Volume + product value + repeatability + margin.

For frozen seafood, size grading, net weight, glazing, processing form, and packaging can all influence the commercial value of the same raw material.

Diversified markets provide a stronger buffer

Differences in performance between China, the United States, the EU, Japan, CPTPP markets, and other regions illustrate the risk of relying too heavily on a limited number of destinations.

A broader market portfolio allows producers to:

  • Allocate volume between regions.
  • Adjust product specifications.
  • Reduce excess inventory risk.
  • Serve different price segments.
  • Respond more quickly when demand weakens in one market.

What Wholesalers and Distributors Should Monitor

The performance of Vietnam seafood exports in the first seven months of 2026 is also relevant to domestic wholesalers and distributors.

Changes in export demand may affect:

  • Raw-material availability.
  • Factory production allocation.
  • Domestic pricing.
  • Product size availability.
  • Packaging specifications.
  • Delivery lead times.

For B2B distributors, three indicators are particularly useful:

Market demand → Raw-material availability → Product pricing and specifications

Monitoring these factors can help businesses plan inventory and purchasing schedules rather than responding only after market prices have already changed.

The seven-month result shows that Vietnam's seafood industry entered the second half of 2026 with a relatively strong foundation. However, reaching the USD 12.5 billion optimistic scenario will depend on the industry's ability to resolve key constraints and adapt to slower or uneven demand across major markets.
